Vikram Misri’s appointment to a key position in the Ministry of External Affairs
The Government announced that Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri will assume the role of Foreign Secretary on July 15. Mr. Misri, who previously served as the Indian ambassador to China, will take over from the current Foreign Secretary, Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
The Personnel Ministry declared, “Appointment of Vikram Misri, IFS (1989), Deputy National Security Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat to the post of Foreign Secretary w.e.f. 15th July 2024 vice Shri Vinay Kwatra.” Known for his expertise in India-China relations, Mr. Misri is anticipated to bring a focused approach to the ongoing tensions between Delhi and Beijing.
Mr. Misri’s notable foreign postings include his tenure as Indian ambassador to Myanmar from 2016-2018, during the Rohingya crisis in Rakhine province, and his service as ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021, where he played a key role in negotiations during the 2020 Galwan crisis. His diplomatic career also encompasses assignments in Indian missions in Pakistan, the U.S., Belgium, and Spain.
