NPCI Goes Global: UPI Arrives in Qatar Through NIPL Partnership
NPCI International Payments (NIPL), the international arm of the Indian payments system NPCI, has signed an agreement with Qatar National Bank (QNB) to bring UPI (Unified Payments Interface) to Qatar. Indian tourists visiting the West Asian country will now be able to make payments using QR codes at a variety of locations, including retail stores, tourist attractions, duty-free shops, and hotels.
The partnership benefits both Indian travelers and Qatari businesses. Indian tourists gain the convenience of using their preferred payment method, while Qatari merchants can attract a wider customer base and experience faster and more efficient payment processing.
“Merchants in Qatar will greatly benefit from UPI, gaining access to a wider customer base and more efficient payment and collection processing,” said Anubhav Sharma, Deputy Chief – Partnerships and Business Development, NPCI International.
NIPL, a subsidiary of NPCI, is focused on expanding the reach of RuPay cards and UPI payments internationally.
“With this new digital payment solution acceptance, we are revolutionising the way transactions are conducted, enhancing the travel experience like never before,” said Adel Ali Al-Malki, Senior Executive VP, QNB Group Retail Banking. “We are confident that this initiative will not only benefit the travel and hospitality sectors but also empower local merchants to thrive in a dynamic and increasingly digital marketplace.”
This launch in Qatar marks another step in NIPL’s international expansion efforts.
